The swing of her gray maxi skirt caught my eyes as I saw this Fashionista stroll in to line up for the Alexander Wang sample sale in New York City, where she was interning at this summer. Her ensemble was simple, ranging from different tones of black and white. Being comfortable seemed to be the goal of her outfit as she prepared herself for the long wait in her loafers and loose sheer sweater. But aside from the large clutch that she toted and her auburn colored hair, something else caught my attention.
At the end of August, when many are still sporting shorts in the heat, this Fashionista ventured out in a beanie. The black hat slouched back with her hair cascading in loose curls over her shoulders. Although the wavy hair could be interpreted as fancy, the beanie instantly made it casual and more appropriate for the day, and even a run to a sample sale. When paired with a beanie, the pop of color from her red lips seemed more acceptable for daywear.
Beanies are usually associated with the colder months but this Fashionista defied this generalization. Although the main purpose of beanies is to keep one’s head warm, they have exploded in popularity as more people wear them to make a fashion statement rather than preventing their ears from freezing. Beanies bring an instant casual element to an ensemble, similar to donning a denim jacket. It introduces a ruggedness that balances out the fanciness and femininity of an outfit.
Although this Fashionista maintains a monochromatic look, beanies can be worn in all different colors to match various outfits. Beanies can be unisex so do not be afraid to look into the men’s section. PacSun offers colored beanies for men but who says Fashionistas cannot don them? Spotted: Roksanda Ilincic displayed a plethora of beanies paired with spring 2012 outfits, from a black beanie with a bright blue ensemble to a neon orange beanie with a gold maxi dress. Do not be afraid to pull out the beanie from your winter stash of clothing and wear it during the warmer months. It’s also a perfect cover up for bad hair days!
