A backpack can be your best friend or your worst nightmare; it can suddenly produce that notebook you have been looking for for weeks, or its strap could snap on the walk to class. It can be plain black or neon and covered in patches. Either way, your backpack should be reflective of your personality. It’s one of the first things people will notice when you walk into class, so why not make a statement about who you are or what your interests are?
When I saw this Fashionista walking through Washington Square Park, I was instantly drawn to the comic book superhero print of her backpack. Not only does it give her peers a good idea of her passions (she told me she is obsessed with Captain America) and create common ground, but it adds a cute pop of color and pattern to her outfit. Her knit scarf and earrings are equally as bold, keeping within a royal blue color scheme. Her metallic gold Ray-Ban aviators are perfect for blocking the glare of the snow this winter, but will also work with endless outfits as we move towards the summer months.
If your current backpack or tote isn’t the most exciting accessory in your wardrobe, do some DIY! Tie-dying a light colored bag can add a bohemian, hippie flare. For some of you more experienced crafters, studding is a cheap and stylish way to give your bag some extra personality. Add some fun key chains or pins if you’re not too handy. Your local thrift store probably has a section where you can find some vintage ones for around a dollar!
Spotted: In Chanel’s spring 2014 ready-to-wear collection, several of the models carried backpacks painted with the famous Chanel logo and loaded with dangling key chains. Who knew backpacks could be so glamorous?
