As a frame-wearer myself, I’ll admit that because my entire family sports spectacles, I really didn’t have a chance of getting 20/20 vision. I pretty much left the hospital with glasses on. Okay, that’s an exaggeration, but as a veteran glasses wearer since year four, I feel like I can really talk my way around a pair.
My first pair of glasses were bright pink, thin wire frames with—get this—Pikachu motifs on the sides. You wish you were that cool in primary school. We all know that kids with glasses often get a bad rep for being uncool, but with the right pair of frames, you really can go from dorky to dreamy. Take this Fashionisto’s pair for example.
His pair of thick-rimmed black glasses—which he tells me are from Jasper Conran—are classic rounded rectangular frames, which suit most face shapes. They’re both bold and subtle. They’re not in your face (ha) or overpowering, but they’re still noticeable thanks to the dark frames. They look very handsome on him, paired with his classic college student style. They add an element of sophistication and professionalism to his look.
For Fashionistas and Fashionistos who need frames, you have two choices here: wear some totally rad glasses or pop in a pair of contacts (or go blind, which I can tell you from experience is no fun at all). Wear your glasses proudly like this Fashionisto; after all, they’re no longer stereotypically worn by the cartoon geek. Think of Superman and Spiderman: Both Clark Kent and Peter Parker wore glasses, and they’re idolized by men everywhere and sighed over by women!
Glasses deserve way more credit than they get. They somehow make you look smarter, they hide tired eyes and, of course, help people see. For something that’s necessary for a lot of people to wear on a daily basis, it’s a good thing that you can accessorize your frames to suit you. Because they’re usually pretty expensive, I suggest finding a pair that flatters your face shape and that can be dressed up or down. Wayfarer style or simple black rectangular frames, as worn by this Fashionisto, are designs that are universally flattering.
If you have perfect vision (lucky you) but want this hipster-chic look, finding a pair of fun plastic frames is not only easy, but much cheaper than the vision-aiding kind. Try Typo for inexpensive non-prescription styles that come in a range of colours and patterns, or go quirky with a pair of round glasses. Go on and make a spectacle in specs!
Spotted: Prada sent their models down the runway in blood red glasses in their fall 2012 menswear show. This look might be a bit daring for some Fashionistos so it’s lucky you can still look chic and charming in a normal pair of specs!
