Ever since the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marilyn Monroe made it very clear that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Maybe if you’re a broke college student and can’t afford diamonds, anything with glitter on it is the next best thing. I’ve been figure skating for most of my life and in that world when it comes to glitter, more is always better. But in the world of fashion, there is a very fine line between cute and tacky. Glitter can be fabulous with just the right amount of it and this week’s Fashionista completely aced that idea.
When I first saw her, I was immediately drawn to her black glittery Sperry Top-Sider boots. They are a perfect alternative to sequin UGGs or black Hunter Boots. Not only are Sperry Top-Sider boots new themselves (at least on Michigan State’s campus), but the glitter adds just the right amount of spunk to make this ensemble fashionable. The glitter takes a normal pair of weather-proof boots and makes them interesting. In my book, it’s a great balance between function and fashion.
Not only does the black tone down the glitter on the boots, but so does the rest of the outfit. Leggings, a white puffer jacket and a solid-colored scarf keep it simplistic, yet cool. Wearing a scarf is an easy way to spice up any outfit and keep warm during the harsh winter months. The pop of glitter and pop of color this week’s Fashionista wears showcases how easy it is to be warm but not have to sacrifice style.
