I have to admit, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, and it’s not just for candy. I absolutely love seeing Fashionistas rocking outfits that are on the girly side because I’m a big fan of Asian fashion. Maybe it’s because I’m half-Chinese myself, but there’s just something so adorable about adding a girly touch to (or going all out feminine!) with your outfit. And what better way to add a little sugar to your look than with a bow?
I was in Japanese class when I spotted this Fashionista, beautiful bow and all. She’s a student at a nearby English school and she and her classmates were visiting my tutorial to have conversation practice with us. She caught my eye straightaway—thanks to that adorably big burgundy bow—and I continued to admire it when she was partnered with me. We became quick friends talking in a mix of Japanese and English and she was more than happy to have her photo taken for CollegeFashionista.
Wearing a bow is a great way to tie back your bangs or sidepieces to keep them out of your eyes. This Fashionista did just that, taking two side pieces–one from each side of her face—and twisted them around to create a rope-like effect, then used a bow clip to secure the two pieces in the centre of the back of her head. It’s a bit similar to how Belle from Beauty and the Beast used to tie back her hair! It’s such a simple and easy hairstyle, but the bow instantly dresses up the look. Think of actress and singer, Ariana Grande. She is pretty much always seen wearing her signature ponytail, which is a pretty simple hairstyle, but it just goes to the next fashion level because of the big bows she likes to wear with it.
Wearing bows is a popular trend for Japanese girls and also is regularly seen in Korean “Uzzlang” fashion. It adds cuteness to an outfit, as in many Asian countries, being youthful-looking and adorable is what is considered attractive.
If wearing a bow in your hair isn’t quite your style, but you still like the look, bows have also recently become a hugely popular motif for jewelry. Try wearing a little bow ring or a pair of ballet flats with bows on the toes. Bows can be found on almost anything these days, so it’s time to bow down to the trend and give it a go!
Spotted: Bows were big and bold at Diane Von Furstenberg’s resort 2010 collection, with models sporting massive bow headbands throughout the entire catwalk.
