STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: The Wide-Leg Skinny

Style Advice of the Week

Pants have gotten a lot of attention this season. Designers like Diesel Black Gold, Celine, Mary Katrantzou and Stella McCartney all had some stunning wide-leg pants on their spring/summer 2012 runways. Mary Katrantzou’s print on print under the sea look is the total opposite of Stella McCartney’s whimsical dusty blue look, but both versions are equally coveted.

Though wide-leg pants are trending, they can sometimes be difficult to pull off. They are not the most flattering style for certain body types, especially on curvy or petite women, but this Fashionista managed to work the wide-leg trend by choosing pants with a smaller print to complement her petite frame. She added a solid shirt in a bright color that tied the look together flawlessly and even blended into her dip-dyed hair. For an added relaxed feel, she wore some well-loved white Chuck Taylors and a slouchy tribal cross body bag. Finally, her vintage jeweled white leather belt added a bit of unexpected retro glamor to the outfit.

When choosing a style of wide-leg pants, take your body shape into consideration. Remember that darker shades will make you look slimmer and can even mask flaws, while brighter colors can often make wide hips and bigger bottoms appear larger. Small prints should be worn by petite women while larger prints should be kept for women with a bit of height. Of course there are always exceptions to these rules, but just keep them in mind when shopping for your next pair of wide-leg pants!
