FASHIONISTA SPOTLIGHT: Linling Navarro

Fashionista Spotlight

This Fashionista was a dose of sunny color on a gray day in Evanston.  While other students trudged around campus with their heads down to avoid puddles, this Fashionista’s bright attitude was the perfect pick-me-up paired with her bright coat and stand out socks. Steal her style tricks to make the most of the color in your wardrobe.

Name: Linling Navarro

Major: Vocal Performance and Pre-Med

Year: Sophomore

CollegeFashionista: Tell me about what you’re wearing.
Linling Navarro: The boots, they’re waterproof leather … knee high socks, legging/pants from Forever 21. Jacket is from Land’s End, and then just black gloves, a little cardigan underneath, a pinkish scarf and a hat that my mom made me.

CF: Tell me about the print on your backpack. How did you pick it?
LN: It’s light blue with flower print, very bright. I love flower-print stuff and this stood out to me.  A lot of their backpacks are blinged out and just too much, but other ones are dull —this one was just like, “Okay, I have to get it.”

CF: Where do you get the rest of your clothes?
LN: Usually Forever 21 but I’ll go anywhere. I love H&M, Urban Outfitters… just anywhere. And my mom’s closet too!

CF: What’s one trend that you see being big in 2013?
LN: I haven’t really thought about this… I think mix-matching colors, like with neons and neutrals. And I think mint is fading out a little bit so we might not see as much of that, but I think Aztec-themed stuff is going to be big too.

CF: Where do you get your fashion inspiration?
LN: The biggest thing I do is shop online. I just shop online a lot, I don’t really read a lot of stuff online because I find myself disagreeing with the stuff that I read. Instead I watch a lot of TV shows with fashion, like Pretty Little Liars, Keeping up with the Kardashians, that kind of stuff.  That’s where I get most of my fashion ideas. I look online and then I try it out in my closet to see what I have, and then I just put stuff together. … I’m from California, so that probably explains a lot of it.

CF: What do you think people should NEVER wear?
LN: Prints that clash. Like, stripes with polka-dots or neon with neon. Sneakers with jeans — oh my gosh, just no. All you have to do is find a pair of fashionable shoes and you can wear them all day, especially for guys.

How To: Staying dry and stylish like this Fashionista doesn’t need to be a challenge —keep rain at bay with a bright raincoat and statement backpack. First, try either a playful raincoat like this ASOS number with animal ears or a standard like this yellow L.L.Bean coat and belted red anorak from Nordstrom. Then, top it off with a classic polka-dot backpack or an aztec-print conversation stater to keep your books dry. Don’t forget an umbrella!
