The first day of school is always exciting because it’s the first time you’re seeing most of your peers and friends in weeks. While I’m sure no one has pulled a complete Mia Thermopolis-esque makeover, it never hurts to put a little more effort into your look.

Whether it’s for your own personal mood boost or to make a good impression with your professor, here are 15 stylish first day of school looks to inspire you to put your best (and most fashionable) foot forward this semester.

9—Velvet is going to be all over campus this semester. So for an on-trend look that is slightly more unique, try searching for pieces that utilize this fabric in unexpected ways (like these overalls). (Photo via @jennafishelberg)

11—One of the best accessories you can have on the first day of school is a smile. So find a jacket that expresses that same sense of excitement, thrill and “you got this” attitude. (Photo via @samanthaneira)

12—Over-the-knee boots shouldn’t saved for GNOs. Try wearing them with a pair of lightweight pants or jeans with a sweater for a more chic, everyday look. (Photo via @haileynw98)

13—Spice things up with layers. I suggest investing in a few really good basic tops. You can layer them with anything from shirts that should be lingerie to velvet tanks, and even summer dresses. Photo via @shelbyshowell
